Free guide to socially responsible investment

Ethical and environmental, or socially responsible investing (SRI) is enjoying unprecedented popularity. Public interest has boomed, fund performance has improved, and the number of funds specialising in the area has grown dramatically.

Ethical and environmental issues are not a passing fad that will disappear. Awareness is only likely to increase and climate change in particular could drive an industrial transformation that affects numerous industries. Of course there will be winners and losers, but if you can find the right opportunity you can profit whilst maintaining your ethical and environmental beliefs.

In our opinion the best way to make an ethical or environmental investment in a portfolio of shares is through a fund, such as a unit trust or OEIC. This means you can gain exposure to the sector but leave the share selection to an expert fund manager.

Most ethical and environmental funds are available within the tax shelters of an ISA or a pension (SIPP). This means most people can easily incorporate socially responsible investment funds into their portfolio. You can invest a lump sum, or make a monthly contribution, and protect gains from the tax man.

More choice is great for investors but, with over 50 funds on offer, trying to select the best can be daunting. This guide should help. First we look at the current investment environment. We explain the different types of investment, look at performance, and the relationship between risk and reward.

Each investor will have their own ethical criteria so our table in our Choosing Socially Responsible Investments factsheet allows you to easily see the difference between funds. We have also included some fund suggestions. Finally we show you how to get your investments off to a head start with savings of up to 5.5% to help you buy more units for your money.
